GOING TO POT: Senator Terrance Nelson

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The U.S. Virgin Islands has been chosen as one of the top 24 “pot destinations” in the world by the editors of High Times magazine.

St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John join such world cities as Amsterdam, Freetown Christiana (Denmark), Marrakesh, Morocco and Negril, Jamaica as part of the “ultimate bucket list for bud-loving travelers,” according to the magazine founded in 1974 by Tom Forcade.

“The U.S. Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States. Its residents are U.S. citizens, but they can’t vote for president and have only one non-voting delegate in Congress. But they do have their own territorial government, which in 2014 voted to decriminalize marijuana, reducing personal possession to a maximum fine of $200,” High Times wrote. “Helping lead the charge was Senator Terrence “Positive” Nelson, a Rastafarian lawmaker who is working to create cannabis-trade policies that will benefit poor Caribbean nations. The islands also boast the kind of gorgeous aquamarine waters and perennial warm temperatures that make marijuana even better.”

American cities to make the High Times grade included Denver, Portland, Seattle, Ann Arbor (Michigan), Boston, Dallas, Madison (Wisconsin), Oakland and San Francisco.
