FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man who made a hasty exit from a cock fighting event in which one one teenager died and three others were wounded — led police on a high-speed chase after he tried to elude officers following him.

Police said that Edgardo “Sopow” Ortiz Jr., 36, was in Estate Glynn just moments after a gunman opened fire on four people attending the animal blood sport event and fled from detectives who were trailing him.

Authorities reported that they actively pursued the fleeing Ortiz at 8:55 p.m. — about 32 minutes after a report of shots fired came in at the St. Croix Cock Fight Coliseum.

Ortiz then barricaded himself in someone’s house he knows without their permission, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD). CIB and Special Ops team discovered a handgun in his vehicle.

Ortiz was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, unlawful entry, failure to register firearm.

Bail was set at $25,000.00 for Ortiz as per chart. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center, pending an advice of rights hearing.

A series of reports beginning in the 1990's revealed that there was everything from coliform bacteria to Cryptosporidium in locally-bottled St. Croix drinking water, according to a then-unpublished University of the Virgin Islands sampling. Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 50 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line. The Virgin Islands Free Press is the only Caribbean news source to regularly incorporate the findings of U.S. Freedom of Information Act requests.
