Dinghy Associated With Singularis Ordered To Leave Yacht Haven Grande After Flying Confederate Flag From Boat Over The Weekend
NOT WELCOME HERE! Three men associated with the vessel Singularis and guests of Yacht Haven Grande were asked to leave the marina this week after flying the Confederate flag on the dinghy tied to the larger yacht.
CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A dinghy that flew the Confederate flag next to the American flag during the Float-A-Palooza event in St. Thomas on Sunday was ordered out of the marina it was docked in this week.
The boat tender was being used for the Singularis owned by Jeffrey Citron, according to What’s Going On St. Thomas, and the larger vessel and its dinghy were ordered out of the Yacht Haven Grande Marina on Monday.
On Sunday three white men were seen conspicuously displaying the Confederate flag in John Brewers Bay, an occurrence that quickly drew the ire of the Virgin Islands boating community and Acting Gov. Osbert Potter.
“The Confederate flag is not welcomed, not accepted, nor tolerated in the Virgin Islands under any circumstances,” Potter said. “The Confederate flag represents divisiveness, bigotry, slavery, and oppression. This is totally out of line with what we as Virgin Islands residents embrace, which is unity and acceptance of all people, regardless of race, color, religion or creed. The flying of the flag is totally offensive to Virgin Islanders, and I will not tolerate this blatant display of hatred to our people.”
And the management of Yacht Haven Grande agreed.
“Yacht Haven Grande were made aware of the inappropriate actions/behavior of some marina guests, Monday afternoon the 12th of June, 2017,” the marina said in a prepared statement. “YHG took the immediate decision to remove the offending crew and vessel from the marina, as such the vessel departed YHG that same evening.”
Citron is the chairman and director of Vonage.
