FREDERIKSTED — A parent of a special needs child says that her son was verbally accosted by a prominent uniformed Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) officer for allegedly not bagging his plastic water bottles properly at a West End supermarket on Tuesday afternoon.
Liz Richards said that her autistic son Shawn, 21, works as a bagger at Stop & Shop Supermarket in Hannah’s Rest and that when VIPD Officer Charles Nibbs saw that his water was not bagged the way he wanted it — he began shouting at the mentally-challenged young man.
“So today this man here (Charles Nibbs) was a complete asshole where my son was concerned,” Richards said. “If anyone knows Shawn they know he has autism. This man (Nibbs) decided that he would start to shout at my son for not bagging gallons of water the way he like in already illegal plastic bags.”
Richards, working as a cashier next to her son at Stop & Shop Supermarket, said she witnessed the whole distressing incident up close and personal.
“So I, being the cashier/mother that I am, corrected the asshole (Nibbs) and let him know that he was dealing with an autistic person (Shawn). The asshole (Nibbs) in turn let me know that my child should wear a sign saying so.”
Richards admitted that she was still hot about the case of abuse of power and lack of political correctness several hours after it took place.
“That motherfucker (Nibbs) has no clue the rage that went through me,” she said. “Then (Nibbs) had the nerve to tell me protect my job. Bitch (Nibbs) that job don’t feed me and neither does taxpayer’s money.”
Ironically, Nibbs and his wife run a non-profit “Luv Kids” organization and he frequently reads out loud to Head Start schoolchildren for the VIPD. He and his wife are childless in their marriage.
Nibbs has been accused of having anger management problems for at least 30 years on St. Croix, with multiple people coming forward to say that the VIPD officer had abused them verbally and physically under the guise of doing his job as a police officer.
There was no official comment from Police Commissioner Delroy Richards Sr. or the VIPD about Nibbs’ latest alleged actions.
The Richards family said today they are very proud of Shawn for maintaining his gainful employment, being licensed to drive an automobile to and from work and many other things he can do as a “high-functioning” autistic person.
On Facebook, Richards encouraged anyone who knows Nibbs to tag the pictures she posted on social media about him after the incident took place.
“So anyone who is friends with this asshole (Nibbs) please feel free to tag his undiagnosed poor excuse for a police officer ass and let him know what magnitude of an asshole he is!”
