FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man was shot multiple times in downtown Frederiksted and died on Sunday night, authorities said.
Police received reports of shots fired about 6:40 p.m. in the area of the Vegetable Market on Queen Street in Frederiksted.
Johnny Silverio De La Cruz, 39, was identified by next of kin as the dead man, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD).
When police arrived on the scene, they said they discovered De La Cruz lifeless on the ground. EMTs on the scene were unable to resuscitate De La Cruz, VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.
De La Cruz was shot primarily in the upper body, according to Dratte.
The V.I.P.D. said the incident remains under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (C.B.I.).
