'LIKE A WAR ZONE': Six Men Shot, Two Dead Near F'sted Vegetable Market

FREDERIKSTED — A shootout near the Lagoon Street Housing Complex left two men dead and four others injured last night, authorities said.

Witnesses said they heard a fusillade of gunshots about 9:10 p.m. Thursday. People who lived in the area said they felt they were living in a war zone near the old Legislature complex and the vegetable market.

Unofficial police reports said some men were gathered at the market when an unknown number of suspects approached and then opened fire.

The opening shots were answered in kind and a shootout occurred near a heavily-populated public housing community.

Two victims were transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital by private vehicle, while four others were taken by ambulance to the medical facility.

People living in the area reported seeing multiple ambulances driving to the scene about 10 p.m.

No other information was available. Police have yet to release an official statement on the incident.
