CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man was arrested for allegedly shooting at a group of teenagers gathered near Fort Christian last month, authorities said.

Tasheem Monsanto, 18, of Bovoni was arrested Wednesday near Nadir, advised of his Constitutional Rights and charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, using a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime, possession of an unlicensed firearm, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

An unidentified person came in to the Richard N. Callwood Command about 2:09 a.m. on June 23 and reported that Monsanto fired six or seven gunshots in the area of Fort Pladsen.

“The individual stated that they were picking up some minors, when they were told that Monsanto was bothering them,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said. “The individual also reported that they observed Monsanto hiding between a tree and called out to Monsanto, as they got into a verbal altercation.”

Bail for Monsanto was set at $30,000.

Unable to post bail, he was booked, processed and remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
