Virgin Islands Free Press’ First Advertiser Is: Amazon

John Cruise Ship (1)

CHRISTIANSTED – The publisher of the Virgin Islands Free Press said today that he is proud to announce that the territory’s most savvy, exciting and truthful online newspaper’s first advertiser is

John McCarthy, a trusted journalist in the Virgin Islands since 1989 who has worked as a reporter for the BVI Beacon, St. Croix Avis, WSVI-TV Channel 8, WJKC-Isle 95 radio and the Virgin Islands Daily News, said ads began running on the “VIFreep” this morning.

McCarthy said that Amazon, which was founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos, did a weeks-long analytics study of the Virgin Islands Free Press and determined that its rising daily, weekly and monthly traffic proved that it was the online media source most likely not only to succeed but to dominate the territory’s online media marketplace.

“We are interested in moving the dialogue with America forward, where the Virgin islands has its fair say in matters of importance to the territory,” McCarthy said. “Other media sources may be better at accurately counting how many chickens escaped from the barn last night, but the Virgin Islands Free Press, through Op-Ed columns that run nationally, editorials that take tough stances on controversial issues and topical stories about subjects of salient interest — will in the long run lead to more tourism for the territory and more understanding about our region ‘The Caribbean.’

The publisher said the Virgin Islands Free Press began in late May with $48 in borrowed money and has been growing exponentially ever since then. McCarthy, who was the news director of WSVI-TV Channel 8, said he is humbled by the partnership with and looks forward to more advertising from major businesses in the future.

“At least with Amazon, we don’t have to worry about whether or not they mailed the check this month,” McCarthy said. “Some of the engineers who wrote the original computer code for are multi-millionaires today, so it is indeed an honor that one of the biggest corporations in America saw fit to advertise with the VIFreep.”

” We will focus on the big picture stories and leave the ‘he said/she said’ stories to the others — when we do a story it will be because it mattered, not because a politician wanted us to run the story,” he added. “Nobody who works for the Virgin Islands Free Press will have a cell phone with any other area code than 340. And I can promise you we won’t be doing any 99-part ‘investigative’ pieces with pet senators about the merits of smoking marijuana in Colorado.”

John McCarthy is primarily known for his investigative reporting on the U.S. Virgin Islands. A series of reports beginning in the 1990's revealed that there was everything from coliform bacteria to Cryptosporidium in locally-bottled St. Croix drinking water, according to a then-unpublished University of the Virgin Islands sampling. Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 40 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line. The Virgin Islands Free Press is the only Caribbean news source to regularly incorporate the findings of U.S. Freedom of Information Act requests. John's articles have appeared in the BVI Beacon, St. Croix Avis, San Juan Star and Virgin Islands Daily News. He is the former news director of WSVI-TV Channel 8 on St. Croix.
