CHRISTIANSTED – A woman walking with her daughter on the boardwalk in town said she was attacked by two young black men when she refused their offer to take her picture after nightfall Saturday, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.

The woman told police that she and her daughter were on the boardwalk heading towards the ferry dock to go to Protestant Cay about 9:15 p.m. when she noticed that three black men were approaching her, the VIPD said.

The woman said at least one of the men offered to take a picture of them at night, but she declined, holding her bag close to her body as she walked away from them, according to police. Two of the men, continued to trail her, and one of them grabbed her bag.

“Come on, ma’am,” one of the would-be bandits said to her, but the woman continued to clutch her bag close to her body, police said. When she did, the other man punched her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground.

The three men then ran off in the direction of the Kings Alley Hotel, as she made her way, her face injured because the punch had hit her in her glasses, causing a bruise, but still holding onto her bag on the way to the ferry dock, where the boat Captain phoned 911 for assistance, police said.

The woman filed the report to police at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 3 at the Ancilmo Marshall Command, located in Bassin Triangle, according to police.

She said then that the suspects were about 16 years old, one dressed in a blue and white shirt with horizontal stripes and the other in a white t-shirt and dark colored shorts, police said.

The woman sustained a visible contusion to the left side of her face, accompanied with swelling and scratches on her left ear, according to police.

On the initial date and time of the incident, officers responded to the call made by the ferry captain, but couldn’t locate the woman. When filing the report, the woman said she didn’t want to go to the police station immediately after the incident, as she wanted to nurse her wounds at Hotel On the Cay Hotel first, police said.

The mugging is under investigation by Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
