Two People Drown When Dinghy Strikes Dock At Crown Bay Marina

CHARLOTTE AMALIE – Two people were drowned and three others injured when the boat they were on struck a concrete piling as it was trying to dock Sunday night, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department.

The 911 Emergency Call Center alerted police at 7 p.m. Sunday to a boating accident that occurred at the docking facility located at the Crown Bay Marina, the VIPD said..

According to the report, a party of five adults was making their way from the Phipps Landing Dock, located on Water Island, to the docking facility at Crown Bay Marina, according to police. The five adults were traveling in a dinghy that struck a concrete piling as they approached the marina.

Two members of the party, a man and woman, were thrown into the water once the dinghy struck the piling, and drowned, police said. The other three people were rushed to the Schneider Regional Medical Center where they were being treated for severe, but non-threatening injuries.

The names of the man and woman who drowned have not been released, pending notification of next of kin, according to police.
