50-Year-Old Man Walking Onto The Highway Is Struck And Killed By Passing Vehicle

FREDERIKSTED – A 50-year-old man who walked onto the highway was struck by a passing vehicle and killed Wednesday night.

The 911 Emergency Call Center alerted police about 6:52 p.m. on Wednesday that there had been an auto incident involving a pedestrian on the Melvin Evans Highway near Williams Delight.

The man, later identified as Juan Matias of Williams Delight, sustained multiple injuries including a bruise on the left knee and gash to the left side of his head, after being struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on the highway.

At approximately 9:55 p.m. Matias succumbed to his injuries at the Juan Luis Hospital and was pronounced dead.

Police said the incident is “still pending” further investigation.
