CHARLOTTE AMALIE – A 56-year-old St. Thomas man was arrested by police Sunday after a citizen spotted him loading a stolen television set into his vehicle.

Michael Swift of Bordeaux was arrested at 5:20 p.m. Sunday and charged with grand larceny, according to police.

Swift was arrested after the victim caught him removing a television from under a shed at the Crown Bay Marina and attempted to put it in his vehicle, police said. During further investigation officers located several other items belonging to the victim in Swift’s vehicle.

Bail for Michael Swift was set at $35,000.00. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections, pending an Advice of Rights hearing.

This is not Swift’s first brush with the law. On June 4, Swift was also charged with grand larceny. His bail then was $55,000.00.

Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 40 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line. The Virgin Islands Free Press is the only Caribbean news source to regularly incorporate the findings of U.S. Freedom of Information Act requests.
