CHRISTIANSTED – A thief lassooed an ATM with a rope and used his SUV to tear it off of its footing at a gas station in Peter’s Rest early this morning.

The 911 Emergency Call Center notified police at 3:52 a.m. Friday that a grand larceny incident had occurred at the Gateway Service Station located in Peter’s Rest.

Police went to the scene and met with an employee of Gateway who stated that at 3:47 a.m. he saw an older model, white-colored, SUV reverse into the service station, being operated by an unknown man wearing a black hoodie.

The man backed the SUV up to the ATM unit, got out and threw a large rope over it, according to police.

The man then got back into the vehicle and drove off; pulling the ATM unit from its housing as he drove off onto Centerline Road, dragging the unit behind him, police said.

The incident is under investigation by police detectives.

Anyone with information concerning this incident should call 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.
