COMMENTARY BY WESLEY SMALL: ‘Keep Your Hands To Yourself’
By Wesley Small/V.I. Free Press Columnist
I have worked in the news business for nearly 30 years during my broadcasting career.
I started at WABC-TV (Eyewitness News) in New York city.
Besides murder, domestic violence cases always sickened me. I can’t believe that I am still reporting on this issue 34 years later.
Before I go off on one my tantrums and scoldings, let me toss out some numbers for you.
Nationally, on an average, 24 people are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner every minute.
A rough estimate reports that at least 12 million women and men are victims every year.
Yes that’s right, it seems as though the domestic violence against men are slightly on the rise.
Numbers vary for both women and men, however men are obviously less likely to report these cases because of the stigma that’s attached.
Here’s something that I found out! Did you know that 74 % of employed domestic violence victims say that they have been harassed by their abusive partner while at work?
Why do we do it to each other? Who knows?
Professionals say that there’s no direct cause or explanation!
Here’s the thing! This is not rocket science folks! We need to change how we view and treat each other!
We need to love one another! To help one another! We need to support and stand in solidarity with victims and survivors by showing them love, respect, and encouragement.
It’s up to us to support women and men as they go through domestic and sexual abuse in our territory. If you see something, then you must say something!
Tell a police, a friend, or a counselor at the Women’s Coalition at (340) 773-9272 or the Women’s Resource Center at (340) 776-7867.
My statistics are from: Live Your Dream Dot Org and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Come on folks!
We can do this!
