ACCUSED: David “Giant” Benjamin
ST. GEORGE’S – A 27-year-old man from the village of Coals Gap in St. David’s was remanded to the Richmond Hill Prison on a charge of non-capital murder in connection with the death of an American tourist whose body was found partly submerged on the La Sagesse Beach in Grenada on Sunday.
David “Giant” Benjamin an ex-convict who was recently released from prison after serving time for rape, appeared before Magistrate Nevelyn John at the Grenville Magistrate Court on Wednesday, hours after he was officially charged with the machete hacking death and rape of Georgia resident Jessica Lewis Colker.
Colker of Atlanta met her death hours after she had arrived in Grenada with her husband Dr. Brian Melito. The couple was staying at a nearby hotel, when they decided to talk a walk along the waterfront.
Sources told the Grenada Informer that in the process of the walk, the couple wandered off into a relatively remote area and were surprised by a masked man wielding a machete who was laying in wait for them there.
According to the Informer, Melito ran to the hotel for help when he saw that his wife was being attacked with the machete.
But when he returned with police and hotel staff they found the lifeless body of Colker partly lying in the sand and water with blood oozing out from the back of her head.
An autopsy report of Colker revealed that her death was as a result of extensive skull fractures and asphyxia.
Hours after the news of the brutal rape-murder hit the streets, Grenadan lawmen went on a manhunt for Benjamin as their main suspect and he eventually surrendered himself to police of his own accord.
