CHARLOTTE AMALIE – A 24-year-old Florida man was sentenced in federal court today to five months in prison for trying to smuggle nearly five kilos of marijuana into the territory.

T’Koi Lee Bryan was given five months imprisonment and three years of supervised release by U.S. District Court Judge Curtis Gomez for having 4.8 kilos of marijuana, according to U.S. Attorney Ronald Sharpe.

Judge Gomez also ordered Bryan to pay a fine of $1,000, pay a special assessment of $100 and perform 400 hours of community service, Sharpe said.

On November 12, 2015, Bryan pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute marijuana. As part of his plea, Bryan admitted that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, with the assistance of a canine, found 4.8 kilos of marijuana in his checked luggage.

According to court records, Bryan was arrested on September 26, 2015, when he arrived at the Cyril E. King Airport, St. Thomas, on board a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Everard Potter.

A series of reports beginning in the 1990's revealed that there was everything from coliform bacteria to Cryptosporidium in locally-bottled St. Croix drinking water, according to a then-unpublished University of the Virgin Islands sampling. Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 50 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line.
