19-Year-Old Accused Of Firing Gun Inside Neighbor’s Catherine’s Rest Home

Oronde Gumbs

         ARRESTED: Oronde Gumbs

CHRISTIANSTED — Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 1:07 p.m., officers responded to the call of a break-in that occurred at Estate Catherine’s Rest.

Responding officers met with a man who said that while he was inside of his home, a male individual with a black t-shirt over his face and a handgun kicked in his screen door, while another person stood on his front porch.

He continued by stating that while the suspect pointed the hand gun towards his head, he lifted his hand upwards towards the ceiling in self-defense. Before fleeing the scene on foot with the other male individual, the suspect fired a single gunshot inside the victim’s home.

According to the victim, the voice of the suspect sounded very familiar and that he believed it was the son of his neighbor that resides to the East.

During further investigation of this incident, officers made contact with the neighbor as he was leaving his home.

The neighbor informed officers that he would bring in his son to the Ancilmo D. Marshall Command once his son was located.

Moments later, officers received notification that the suspects were observed in the neighbor’s pick-up truck.

Officers then located the vehicle, and successfully detained 19-year-old Oronde Gumbs and a fifteen year old minor and transported them to the Ancilmo D. Marshall Command for further investigation.
Oronde Gumbs and the 15 year old minor were arrested and charged with 1st Degree Burglary.

The minor was transported to the Youth Rehabilitation Center, pending an Advice of Rights hearing.

Unable post to post bail, Gumbs was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility, pending an Advice of Rights hearing.

St. Croix Chief of Police Arthur Hector said he “applauded the officers and detectives for their quick response and diligence regarding this case.”
