Gunfire Erupts Near Watergut Homes Again Leaving 24-Year-Old Man Dead

CHRISTIANSTED — Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 11:08 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report of gunfire having been discharged in the vicinity of the Ruby Housing Community, located in the Water Gut area.

Police went to the scene of the shooting and found an unresponsive man lying on the ground of Building 3 Ruby Housing Community.

Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene and found no signs of life in the victim, according to police.

Preliminary information revealed that the victim may not have been shot where he was found because one of the victims’ slipper was found on the other side of the Housing Community adjacent to the David Hamilton Jackson Terrace.

The victim was later identified as Luis Vergas, 24,  of the Ruby Housing Community.

This homicide is under active investigation, and Police are asking anyone with information concerning this incident to phone the Criminal Investigation Bureau at (340) 712-6024, (340) 712-6037, 911 or the anonymous tip service, Crime Stoppers USVI, at 1-800-222-8477.

On March 28, two Estate Grove Place brothers were killed while playing dominoes in front of the Ruby Rouss housing community (formerly Watergut Homes). In September of 2015, four people were injured in a “fusillade” of gunfire in the same general area.

Gov. Kenneth Mapp held a press conference days after the Easter Monday massacre on St. Croix that left 29-year-old Kanta Payne and 33-year-old Kayan Payne dead, saying that the gun violence situation in the territory is likely to get worse before it gets better.
