St. Croix Man Charged With Animal Abuse After Allegedly Chopping Two Dogs With A Machete

CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix man was arrested on a warrant behind a Times Square convenience store today charging him with two counts of animal cruelty for allegedly chopping two dogs with a machete, according to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD).

Police said that Ala Zatar was arrested in the rear of Bienvenidos Mini Mart where he was charged with two counts of animal abuse and one count of disturbing the peace, the VIPD said.

On Friday, January 01, 2016, Ala Zatar struck two dogs with a machete causing severe injuries about the dog’s body, police said.

The owner of the two dogs positively identified Ala Zatar as the individual who struck his dogs with a machete in his presence, according to the VIPD.

Bail for Zatar was set at $15,000. 00 by the Virgin Islands Superior Court. Unable to post bail, Zatar was remanded to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility in Estate Golden Grove, pending an Advice of Rights hearing.
