Mapp Says V.I. Income Tax Refunds Checks Will Be In The Mail This Week

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The first batch of 2015 income tax refunds have been transmitted to the Department of Finance for processing this week, according to a written statement from Government House.

At least $10 million in refunds will be paid out, Finance Commissioner Valdamier Collens and Internal Revenue Director Marvin Pickering said on Tuesday.

Gov. Kenneth Mapp was pleased to note the timely processing of refunds and congratulated Internal Revenue Finance employees for their hard work.

“It is our strengthened financial condition that has permitted us to release these funds to the public,” Mapp said.

Commissioner Collens has pledged that the Finance Department will process 2015 tax refund checks immediately.

Collens and Pickering credited “the hard work and dedication of their employees in the continuous processing and payment of income tax refunds. “

Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 40 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line.
