Wanted Accused Murderer Samuel ‘Ghost’ Roberts Allegedly Shoots Four At St. Croix Cock-Fighting Pit … Killing 16-Year-Old Boy

WANTED: Samuel ‘Ghost’ Roberts

FREDERIKSTED — Police are seeking a 20-year-old St. Croix man after a cock fight turned deadly when a wanted accused murderer shot four people — killing a 16-year-old boy — and critically wounding a man with a shot to the head — at a popular animal blood sport event near mid-island last night.

Police said that Samuel Roberts, 20, who has been actively sought by police in connection to another murder since January 31, allegedly opened fire at the St. Croix Cock Fight Coliseum in Estate Glynn on Saturday night and left one teen-ager dead and three others injured — one critically.

Police began receiving reports of gunshots fired in the area about 8:23 p.m. on Saturday, according to VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte.

When police arrived on the scene shortly after the reports came in, a teen-ager named Juan Aponte was discovered dead, one man had been grazed on the face by a bullet, a woman was shot in the leg and a man was critically injured with a gunshot to the head and airlifted off-island, Dratte said.

None of the wounded victims were able to return fire with the shooter, according to Dratte.

Police have never divulged any information about the alleged murder Roberts was connected to prior to being sought by police on February 4 when a wanted poster and an All Points Bulletin (APB) was released to the media and public.

Police have been unable to locate Roberts on this 84-square-mile island since first starting to look for him 39 days ago.

Dratte told the Virgin Islands Free Press on Sunday afternoon that Roberts is wanted in connection with the shooting death of McDonald Samuel (no relation) at Lorraine Village Apartments on January 31, 2017 — it was the first murder of the year on St. Croix.

So far, there have been 12 murders in the territory — with eight of them taking place on St. Thomas — and four on St. Croix.

Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 40 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line.
