GOVERNMENT HOUSE: Inmate Commits Suicide At Golden Grove Prison … Family To Be Notified

GOLDEN GROVE ADULT CORRECTIONAL FACILITY: The site of the possible suicide at the territory’s only prison.

FREDERIKSTED — An inmate at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility has committed suicide in his prison cell, authorities here said tonight.

Bureau of Corrections, Assistant Director Everett Hansen, reported the possible suicide at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility.

The detainee was found unresponsive in his cell and was then rushed to the Juan F Luis Hospital where he later expired.

“It is always unfortunate to report a loss of life; however, we remain steadfast to our mission to provide “Custody, Security, and Control.” Hansen said.

“The incident is under investigation and the next of kin will be notified,” Government House said.

The fact that the inmate was referred to as a “detainee” rather than an inmate could mean that the prisoner was awaiting trial when he took his own life.

Government House spokesman Samuel Topp did not immediately return a request for clarification of the matter.

Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 40 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line.
