CHARLOTTE AMALIE – A St. Thomas man was ordered by a federal judge to serve five years in prison for trying to take eight pounds of cocaine from here to Florida and being part of a larger drug smuggling conspiracy, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Rhasheel Charles, 30, of St. Thomas, was sentenced on Thursday to 60 months in prison and five years of supervised release for drug conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, Acting U.S. Attorney Joycelyn Hewlett said.

U.S. District Court Judge Curtis Gomez also ordered Charles to pay a $100 special assessment and complete 400 hours of community service, Hewlett said.

On January 31, 2017, Charles pleaded guilty to drug conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

According to the plea agreement filed with the court, Charles was attempting to carry 3.55 kilograms (7.83 pounds) of cocaine in a bag onboard an American Airlines flight to Miami, Fla., when a Customs and Border Protection canine alerted authorities to the drugs in the bag.

The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (ICE/HSI).

It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sigrid TejoSprotte.
