St. Croix’s Zayvon Acoy Arrested After Police Say He Beat, Strangled His Underage Girlfriend Because She Wouldn’t Let Him Check Her Cell Phone Contacts

CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix man was arrested after police said that he allegedly strangled and beat his underage girlfriend for not letting him look at her cell phone.

Zayvon Acoy, 27, was arrested about 12:09 a.m. on Tuesday after the 17-year-old girlfriend’s mother reported that Acoy had attacked her daughter, the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) said on its website.

Acoy also allegedly took personal electronic items and cash from the victims’ bedroom before he fled the area, according to the VIPD.

“Apparently, the man suspected the girl was cheating on him and wanted to check her contacts and who she was speaking to,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.

Acoy is charged with simple assault and battery-domestic violence, disturbing the peace by fighting, petit larceny, second-degree rape, second-degree unlawful sexual contact-domestic violence.

No bail was set as per the domestic violence statute.

Acoy was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center Pending an advice of rights hearing, police said.

On Monday August 21, at around 3:15 pm, officers were dispatched to a disturbance at a residence in Peters Rest.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with a female minor and her mother.

The victim, who was interviewed with her mother, stated that she got into an argument over her cell phone with Acoy.

The suspect then started choking her, physically assaulted her, and then fled the area when the victim attempted to call 911.

The victim was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital by private vehicle where she was admitted for treatment.

The case is an active investigation by the VIPD Domestic Violence unit, police said.
