Indie pop duo Wild Belle comprised of siblings Elliot and Natalie Bergman, has released an impromptu single titled “Hurricane” Friday (Oct. 20).
Although the song compares a lover to a natural disaster, with the recent destruction from Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, the pair decided to make their song count: All proceeds from the song going directly to those suffering in either the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, which were directly impacted by the September hurricanes.
“We are in the middle of making our third album, but wanted to release some material from the Wild Belle vaults,” the duo tells Billboard. “A segue between old and new. Plus, we really wanted to press 45s and thought this would be a great way to raise money for the people of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean islands affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Here is ‘Hurricane,’ a swoopy broken-hearted ballad with surf guitars. Fresh off the press!”
As the Bergmans mentioned, “Hurricane” was sitting in the Wild Belle archives, as it was a song written before the hurricanes hit this fall. But having spent a lot of time in the Caribbean over the years, they felt there was no better time to release the from-the-vault track.
The song itself is slow tempo, lackadaisical one that sounds like it could have fit on the Big Little Lies soundtrack — a love song using a hurricane as a metaphor with a chorus that says, “He was a hurricane, took me down and swept me away.”
The group is originally from Chicago.
Charity support will go to United For Puerto Rico and All Hands – US Virgin Islands Hurricane Response.
