CRUZ BAY — If all goes well, people on St. John could have power restored next week for the first time since a pair of devastating Category 5 hurricanes struck in September, the quasi-governmental authority told NPR.

“Portions of St. John are scheduled to be restored by the middle of next week,” Jean Greaux, Jr., communications director for Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) said.

So far WAPA has connected 16 percent of St. Thomas with electricity and 1.6 percent of St. Croix, as of Oct. 18.

Divers were to look for damage to the undersea cables that power St. John on Friday, according to CNN.

After the assessments, the power authority says Cruz Bay, a few schools, and possibly a few other parts of the island will have power restored by the end of next weekend.

As they repair electrical transmission and distribution lines on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John, WAPA says they hope to restore power to 90 percent of the territory by Christmas.
