CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A brave St. Thomas man fought off an armed robber at a poorly-lit East End bus stop at night and gave his attacker a proper beating after he disarmed him.

Police said the incident took place before 10:36 p.m. on Saturday when the 911 Emergency Call Center took the report of a man and woman waiting at a bus stop in Smith Bay.

The man and woman were sitting at the bus stop when a man walked up to them and pointed a gun at them as he demanded they turn over their cash and cell phones.

The man told the armed man that he didn’t have any money, but he was willing to give up the cell phone.

A fight started between the two men and while they struggled the gun went off and a bullet grazed the victim’s head.

Despite the injury, the man kept fighting and was able to wrest the gun away from the man and throw it over a nearby fence.

The man said that he gave the armed attacker a savage beating with a closed fist, before two other men intervened on the attacker’s behalf.

The suspect and the two men who intervened then fled the scene in a direction that the victims didn’t notice.

Police went to the area on Sunday near the fence that the man described and members of the Criminal Investigation Task Force found the handgun from the night before.
