CRUZ BAY — Police in St. John are searching for a well-known British lawyer who has gone missing.

Mark Moroney, 70, has been missing since Sunday evening from his home in the Chocolate Hole area of St John.

According to police, he had gone outside about 8 p.m. to retrieve a flashlight from his car during a Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) power outage — and has not been seen since.

The electricity was off in St. John for at least six hours during an extended blackout that started on St. Thomas.

The St. John Community Foundation said a reward is being offered for information helpful to finding him.

“Thoughts and prayers for dear Mark from the Isle of Man where he practiced for many years,” Island advocate Paul Beckett posted on the Foundation’s Facebook page. “A gentle soul and a brilliant mind.”

Moroney had a long and distinguished career at the Manx bar on the Isle of Man and founded the law firm Moroneys.

The Isle of Man is a British dependency in the Irish Sea.
