Earthquake Measuring 4.5 on Richter Scale Hits About 70 Miles Off Coast of Culebra This Afternoon

SAN JUAN — An earthquake registering 4.5 on the Richter Scale struck the ocean floor 69 miles north of Culebra, Puerto Rico this afternoon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 1:54 p.m. local time at a depth of 25 miles underground.

Puerto Rico has had five earthquakes in the past 24 hours, 29 earthquakes in the last seven days, 144 earthquakes in the past 30 days and 1,664 earthquakes in the last 365 days.

An earthquake measuring between 4 and 4.9 on the Richter Scale is considered a “light” earthquake.
