CHRISTIANSTED — The Virgin Islands Department of Health (VIDOH) said it is “pleased” to offer the 2018 Disease Reporting Requirements training for School Nurses & Administrators.
As we develop best practices for disease surveillance in the territory, it is important to maintain engagement and readiness with our key community healthcare stakeholders.
If you are a district nursing coordinator, school or college nurse or an appointed school administrator in an institution that has no on-site nurse, this training is for you.
The practice of school nursing is a challenging nurse specialty. School nurses care for thousands of children with various health issues, in a setting often separated from other health care professionals. They have the skillset and the insight needed to detect potential health problems among students as a group or to determine the individual health needs of students, if you think that you have what it takes to be a school nurse offering public health services, you may want to check out this article and look into getting a DNP or an MPH degree. These nursing skills are critically important during public health crises, including vaccine preventable disease cases and outbreaks.
Trainings will be held on April 11th and 12th at the following locations:
St Thomas/St John: Wednesday, April 11th, from 8am-12pm @ Schneider Regional Medical Center’s Education Institute on the 5th floor
St Croix: Thursday, April 12th, from 8am-12pm @ Charles Harwood Complex, 1st floor, Room 1016
Learning Objectives:
To understand the rationale for systematically monitoring trends in health, disease and the determinants of health.
To rapidly detect unusual events, cases, or outbreaks in the school setting and how to appropriately report them to the VIDOH.
To increase understanding of appropriate responses to infections in coordination with the VIDOH and access official guidelines from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
To protect student health by promoting and enforcing immunization requirements for school enrollment and collaborate with the Immunization Program to facilitate immunization access to uninsured children.
To increase the understanding of the CDC immunization requirements as recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ICIP-CDC) and the VIDOH.
To increase understanding on how to read immunization cards and navigate local requirements.
Continuing education units (CEU)s are available through University of the Virgin Islands’ Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) with a cost of $25 per person for the 4h workshop, cash or check payable to UVICELL on the day of training. VIDOH is currently working with the Nursing Board to facilitate CNEs for nurses.
