CHARLOTTE AMALIE – Governor Kenneth Mapp has issued proclamations recognizing National Nurses, Hospitals and Tourism Weeks.

The week May 6-12, 2018 has been declared National Nurses Week with the theme “Nurses Inspire, Innovate, Influence”. The American Nurses Association, Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center and the Schneider Regional Medical Center will join forces to celebrate the amazing work of Virgin Islands nurses.

“I ask that all residents of this territory and the people of our Nation join me in honoring the registered nurses who care for all of us,” Mapp said. “I especially encourage the residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands to celebrate registered nurses’ accomplishments – not just during this week, but at every opportunity during the year.”

The week May 6-12, 2018 is also National Hospital Week. “Caring Is Our Calling” is this year’s theme recognizing all dedicated healthcare professionals and medical personnel who provide healthcare services to the community.

“I urge all residents to express their appreciation for the people, facilities and technology that make trustworthy, reliable healthcare possible in our territory,” the governor said.

National Tourism Week has also been proclaimed for May 6-12, 2018. This year’s theme “Travel Then and Now” is especially significant after suffering two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017.

“The huge impact of these storms on our tourism economy has been catastrophic with many in the industry reconstructing a robust tourism industry,” he said.

As part of the 35th annual National Travel and Tourism Week, the Department of Tourism has organized month-long community activities.

“On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, the community is asked to wear red to salute the men and women of the service industry,” the proclamation reads.
