CHARLOTTE AMALIE — About 10,000 people on St. Thomas were without power today after one of the units at the Harley power plant tripped this morning.

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) said at least 9,900 customers on three St. Thomas electrical feeders (7C, 8B, 9C) are experiencing an electrical outage.

WAPA said the “service interruption” happened “after one of three dispatched units at the Harley power plant tripped at at 9:37 am today.”

“Plant personnel have restarted the tripped unit to facilitate restoration of service to all customers,” WAPA said. “Earlier customers on Feeders 8A and 9E were affected, those feeders have been restored.”

Meanwhile, WAPA said others are affected by outages on St. Thomas today as well

“From 8:30 am to 3 pm today, approximately four customers on St. Thomas Feeder 6B, will experience an electrical service interruption while crews replace a pole near the Legislature’s Capital Building,” WAPA said.

The Authority said that “while work is being performed, vehicular traffic will be reduced to one lane.”

“Motorists traversing the area are asked to proceed with caution, and adhere to traffic directions, for the safety of crews, pedestrians and other drivers,” WAPA said. “This work was scheduled a week ago but was postponed due to inclement weather.”
