CHRISTIANSTED — Police say they are actively investigating the shooting death of a Hispanic man on St. Croix behind the Gas For Less Service Station late last night.

Miguel Angel Cruz, 28, was found dead of a gunshot wound in the Diamond Crest Plaza parking lot area near Sunny Isle Shopping Center about 11:26 p.m. Sunday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“I was told that a homeless man was harassing a kid earlier in McDonald’s and they caught up to him at the gas station,” a source close to the police investigation said.

Cruz appeared to have sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to the VIPD. He was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a medical attendant.

Police along with EMTs responded and found an unresponsive male individual with no vital signs who was later identified as being Cruz.

VIPD public information officer Glen Dratte said a concerned citizen reported seeing what looked like a lifeless body behind Gas For Less Service Station and called the 911 Emergency Call Center.

Dratte said that Cruz was positively identified by next of kin as the shooting victim.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is actively investigating this incident and is asking anyone with information to please call the CIB Crime line at (340) 778-4950, Crime Stoppers USVI at 1-800-222-8477 or 911.
