VIPD: St. Croix Man Shoots Horse Multiple Times, Is Arrested For Shooting Man On It

CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix man was arrested today after police said he drove up to a man on horseback and shot at him wildly — but only killed the horse.

Ashnel Evelle Walters, 32, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, the Virgin Islands Police Department said, adding that “other possible charges pending.”

Walters was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending an advice-of-rights hearing, according to the VIPD.

On Sunday, the 911 Emergency Call Center received a call at about 4:40 p.m. of a multiple discharging of shots in Work and Rest, Christiansted — near St. Croix’s South Shore.

When police arrive on the scene they discovered multiple shell casings on the ground in the roadway and a dead horse in the area that was shot multiple times.

A preliminary investigation revealed a man was riding a horse when a car pulled up next and started discharging multiple gunshots striking the victim in the mid-section of the body and killing the horse.

The unidentified victim of the shooting was transported by private vehicle to the Juan F. Luis Hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained from gunshot wounds.

The case is currently under active investigation by the Major Crimes Unit, the VIPD said.

The horse was examined by the Department of Agriculture’s Veterinarian and this incident is also being investigated by the VIPD Animal Cruelty Division.
