Lockhart Elementary Students Learn Wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A teacher at Lockhart Elementary School introduced her students to the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) bins on Monday.

If a student finishes an assignment quickly they have the opportunity to select one of 16 STEM bins, each containing various STEM activities, to keep them engaged while their classmates complete the in-class assignment.

STEM bins are an innovative way to foster creativity, build problem-solving skills, and foster collaboration while maximizing class time, according to Lockhart Elementary first-grade teacher Ms. Gerard.

Lockhart Elementary School in Estate Thomas serves 667 students in grades kindergarten to grade six.

Lockhart Elementary placed in the bottom 50 percent of all schools in Virgin Islands for overall test scores (math proficiency is bottom 50 percent, and reading proficiency is bottom 50 percent) for the 2015-16 school year.

The student:teacher ratio of 15:1 is higher than the Virgin Islands state level of 13:1.
