Sint Maarten Official Theo Heyliger Moved To Bonaire Because Jail Is Overcrowded

KRALENDIJK — The former Sint Maarten parliament member Theo Heyliger will spend his pre-trial detention in Bonaire.

Until now, Heyliger was being held at the Philipsburg police station in Sint Maarten.

He is accused of large-scale corruption, bribery and fraud in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria on Sint Maarten.

The decision to move Heyliger to Bonaire was made because Point Blanche Prison in Sint Maarten has reached its maximum capacity of 70 people.

Heyliger has apparently been moved to a judicial complex in Bonaire.

The move is part of the Dutch Public Prosecution Service’s efforts to comply with fundamental human rights.
