CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix man is accused by federal authorities of trying to deal 11 pounds of cocaine on the Big Island.
Jakwan Sweeney, 21, of St. Croix arrested Wednesday on an indictment charging him with conspiracy and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert said.
Sweeney made his initial appearance before Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller and was detained pending further proceedings on Friday, Shappert said.
According to the indictment, between August 1st and September 24, 2018, Sweeney conspired to possess with the intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.
If convicted of conspiracy or possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, Sweeney faces a term of imprisonment of not less than ten years and not more than life and a fine of $10,000,000.00.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigated this matter.
It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sigrid Tejo-Sprotte.
