Gov. Bryan Puts Prison Inmates To Work Cleaning Up Territory’s Roadsides

FREDERIKSTED — Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. said on Friday he would start an Inmate Work Program to assist in the clean up of towns and roadsides and other beautification efforts in the territory.

The Inmate Work Program is a joint initiative between Government House, the Bureau of Corrections (BOC) and the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA).

“This initiative is just one of the many our administration will undertake to beautify our islands and improve the quality of life for Virgin Islanders,” Bryan said. “We are all stakeholders in the efforts to improve our community, and I trust that extending this opportunity to our inmates will give to them just as much as they will to our community. I thank Administrator Sanes and BOC Director Nominee Wynnie Testamark for leading the initiative, as well as the Virgin Islands Waste Management Agency.”

St. Croix Administrator Sammuel Sanes echoed Bryan’s sentiments Friday by describing the program as “a hands-on initiative that offers inmates the opportunity to give back to their community.”

The Inmate Work Program will begin on Monday, April 15, with the first cleanup initiative starting in Christiansted Town.

  1. Great initiative!!! It’s about time those inmates are put to good use. St. Croix is filthy from east to west. Good job Governor Bryan!!!

  2. Was about time our Tax dollars start doing something in return. Because it’s our tax dollars that are maintaining these Big babies in jail. I am paying child support for a big baby that’s in jail, and I am not even his parent.

  3. There taking jobs away from law abidding citizens and bringing back slave labor at the same time.
