Senator Gittens Praises Community Service Day Participants on St. Croix

FREDERIKSTED — When the public and private sector work together, great things can happen.

This was the sentiment expressed by Senator Kenneth Gittens after participating in today’s 9th Annual Celebration of Service alongside Home Depot and other community partners.

Senator Gittens said volunteers assisted in building picnic tables and benches on-site to be donated to schools, non-profit organizations and other areas in the community where they are needed.

Backpacks were also loaded with supplies for students and donated to St. Croix schools. The Home Depot Foundation primarily supports veterans, education and non-profit organizations.

Senator Gittens said a number of government agencies also turned out today, making Home Depot’s event a success.

In all Home Depot provided 1,000 backpacks to St. Thomas school children on Monday. And 1,000 backpacks to St. Croix school children today.

“One of the most touching parts was seeing the support given to our National Guard soldiers who are getting ready to be deployed in the coming weeks,” he said. “I want to thank Home Depot for being such a great corporate sponsor and thank our soldiers for their service and their support of our nation and community.” Senator Gittens said he wishes the deploying soldiers and their families the very best during the upcoming months and prays for their safe return to the Territory.
