Man Driving Car That Reeked Of Marijuana Busted For Drugs, Ammo At Traffic Stop

ARRESTED: Jelani Walters on St. Thomas.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man caught in a traffic stop near Hospital Ground was driving a car that reeked of marijuana prompting a police search of the vehicle that found drugs and ammunition, authorities said.

Officers assigned to the Virgin Islands Crime Initiative (VICI) arrested Jelani Walters about 9:20 p.m. on December 7 and charged him with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of ammunition, the VIPD said.

“Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle operated by Walters in the Hospital Ground area,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which prompted a search of the vehicle.”

Marijuana, a firearm, and ammunition were found as a result of the search.

Bail for Walters was set at $25,000.00. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC) pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
