CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man charged with first-degree murder nearly a decade ago has been shot dead near the place where police said he shot a man to death in 2010.

Kali “Calico” Canton, 31, was “shot about the body” until dead about 11:07 p.m. on Monday in Hospital Ground, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Police responded to Hospital Ground, St. Thomas after being notified of the “sound of gunfire” by the 911 Emergency Call Center, according to the VIPD.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Canton dead in the roadway in Hospital Ground, VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

The VIPD said it is seeking “the assistance of anyone with information regarding the death of Mr. Canton,” according to Derima.

Canton was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Jibaro “Dinero” Nibbs near the basketball court in Hospital Ground on February 15, 2010. Nibbs was also known as “Prez.”

Some 39 homicides have occurred in the territory so far this year. St. Croix has seen 22 murders and St. Thomas has suffered 17.

Technically Mr. Canton is not a murderer. He was initially convicted of murder; appealed the verdict; and successfully had the conviction overturned. He was later released from prison.

Just some data I am offering which you might wish to verify.
