Police Investigating Two Armed Robberies At Sunny Isle Shopping Center Tonight

CHRISTIANSTED — Police are investigating two robberies at Sunny Isle Shopping Center businesses tonight.

The first robbery happened about at 6:38 p.m. tonight at Champs Sports, the Virgin Islands Police Department said, adding that officers were dispatched to each location.

“Investigation revealed that two masked males with guns entered the store and demanded money,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “The suspects pointed their firearms at employees and directed the opening of cash registers. An employee opened the register and the suspect took an undisclosed amount of money. The suspects then fled the area.”

The second robbery occurred at KFC-Pizza Hut, came in to the 911 Emergency Call Center at 9:04 p.m. tonight, according to the VIPD.

“Investigation revealed that an unknown male entered the restaurant brandishing a firearm and demanded the manager open the cash register,” Derima said. “The manager complied, and the man took the money out of the register and left the area.”

The suspect was described as being six-feet tall, between 180 and 190 pounds with a dark complexion, dressed in gray Army fatigues, a gray nylon jacket, and a white cloth covering his mouth, police said. He carried a brown backpack.

No injuries were reported in either of the two robberies tonight, according to police.

These cases are currently under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).
