CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Marvin Blyden said he is proud to announce that among other bills and amendments passed at the January 29 General Session, the St. Thomas senator succeeded in getting an amendment passed prohibiting development of new gas stations within 1,000 feet of a residential area.
The amendment was offered with the safety of the public in mind, as the disastrous fire that broke out at the Gas Works service station in Bovoni still disturbs the minds of residents, Blyden said.
The Majority Leader said that he is concerned for what impact multiple gas station developments can have on our environment as they pose risks of air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, and catastrophe in the event a fire breaks out.
Senator Blyden respects and supports the efforts of local business owners, but he firmly believes that their freedoms should not overshadow the health and safety of the community.
