Bovoni Man With Weapon Allegedly Beats Former Girlfriend After Breaking In

ARRESTED: Merwin C. Potter, Jr., 27, on St. Thomas.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man allegedly broke into his former girlfriend’s residence and beat her while he had a weapon, authorities said.

Merwin C. Potter, Jr. of Estate Bovoni turned himself in to detectives of the Domestic Violence Unit, who arrested and charged him with second-degree assault-domestic violence about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Police officers were sent by emergency dispatchers to a residence in Anna’s Retreat in reference to an assault on Monday, according to the VIPD.

“The victim stated that Potter, who is her former boyfriend, entered her residence without permission and assaulted her while he was in possession of a firearm,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “The victim sustained minor injuries in the incident.”

Potter was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC) pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

No bail was set as per territorial domestic violence laws.
