Major 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Jamaica, Cayman Islands

KINGSTON — A major 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit off the northwest coast of Jamaica today about 78 miles west of the Cayman Islands. But no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at latitude 19.3, longitude 78.8 and released the energy equivalent of 84 atomic bombs at 2:10 p.m. today at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Officials were assessing the situation but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The nearest volcano to the earthquake scene is Volcán Azul, about 928 kilometers away in Nicaragua.

Puerto Rico has been hit by a long series of earthquakes this month culminating in a deadly 6.6 magnitude earthquake.
