CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A convicted sex offender Alaska police have identified as a suspect in a homicide at a hotel in Anchorage has been arrested in St. Thomas nearly two months after the crime, authorities said.
Brant Marshall, 40, of Anchorage, who is known to acquaintances as “Joey Snow” and “Snowy,” is wanted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges. He is a suspect in a December 3, 2019 shooting that killed 34-year-old Grant Fowler at the Black Angus Inn in Alaska.
Anchorage police said in December that their investigation into the shooting revealed that Marshall had traveled outside of Alaska. He was arrested in St. Thomas on January 28.
Acting on a tip, two U.S. Marshals on their lunch break in downtown Charlotte Amalie happened to spot Marshall on the lam the same day they got the wanted poster on him.
“Somebody in the Alaska U.S. Marshal’s Office had contacted our deputy, Amos Workman, and Amos was out looking for the guy earlier that morning,” U.S. Marshal James Clarke said.
An updated community alert from the Anchorage Police Department said Marshall was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force in St. Thomas. Police said he will be extradited back to Alaska soon.
Marshall’s criminal history includes convictions of sexual abuse of a minor, assault and failure to register as a sex offender.
“They know this is a lawless country so they all will head here.” Shermaine “Uprising” Springer wrote on the Virgin Islands Free Press’ Facebook page today.
Marshall is accused of shooting Fowler in the upper body inside the inn in Anchorage. Fowler died soon after arriving at the Alaska hospital that day.
On December 12, the Anchorage Police Department spoke to a witness who told detectives several people were hanging out in the room when Marshall became angry. The deranged Alaska man was asking people where his “foils” were.
“[The witness] said [Marshall] had a gun, and pointed it at everyone in the room. [The witness] said [Marshall] told everyone to pack their stuff and leave. [The witness] said she saw [Marshall] walking behind [Fowler] towards the door and then she heard a gunshot. [The witness] said [Fowler] fell to the floor and was bleeding from his back. [The witness] said [Marshall] apologized and left the room.”
Marshall apparently lived undetected by federal or local authorities as a sex offender in USVI territory for at least a month before he was captured as a wanted murder fugitive by the U.S. Marshals Service on Tuesday.
Anchorage police said Marshall remains in official custody in the U.S. Virgin Islands after a Crimestoppers’ tip led to his arrest here.
A total of 56 days elapsed between the murder of Fowler in Alaska and Marshall’s arrest in the USVI seven days ago.
Alaska is a former United States territory that became a state on January 3, 1959. America bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million.
