VIPD: Motorcycle Rider Flown Off Island For Treatment After Hitting Wall

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A 42-year-old Lindbergh Bay motorcycle rider is lucky to be alive today after narrowly avoiding a head-on collision when a vehicle was traveling on the wrong side of the road in St. Thomas this weekend.

The 911 Emergency Call Center was notified of a motorcycle accident in the vicinity of the Fortuna Townhouses about 5:26 p.m. Saturday.

The operator of the motorcycle, who was conscious at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, told police that he was traveling on the roadway and observed a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on the wrong side of the road, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

He attempted to avoid a head-on collision with the vehicle and lost control of his motorcycle, hitting a wall, according to the VIPD.

“The driver of the motorcycle was transported to the hospital via private vehicle,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “He was not wearing protective headgear and received injuries to his head and other parts of his body as a result of the crash.”

He was listed in stable condition, and arrangements were being made for him to be flown out of the territory for further medical treatment.

This accident is currently under active investigation.

Anyone with information in this matter is urged to call 911 or the Traffic Investigation Bureau at (340) 774-2211.
