Sion Farm Man Wanted For Stabbing At Gas Station Arrested By Police: VIPD

CHARGED: Shamal Riviere, 30, of Sion Farm, St. Croix.

CHRISTIANSTED — A man wanted for a stabbing that happened at a mid-island gas station eight months ago was charged with attempted murder on Wednesday, St. Croix Police Chief Sidney Elskoe said.

Shamal Riviere, 30 of Sion Farm was arrested and charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon during the commission of a crime of violence, Elskoe said.

Riviere was identified as the individual who stabbed an unidentified victim near the La Reine Service Station on July 26, 2019, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Riviere evaded apprehension for several months until officers, acting on a tip from the community, conducted surveillance and apprehended Riviere without incident, according to the VIPD.

Bail for Riviere was set at $250,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

St. Croix Police Chief Elskoe applauded the community for “Seeing Something and Saying Something.”

“The men and women of the VIPD, under the leadership of Commissioner Trevor A. Velinor, have been working very hard to regain, and maintain, the trust of our community,” Chief Elskoe said.

He urged the public to call 911 to report crimes in progress and to call tips in to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 where they can remain anonymous.
