CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A routine traffic stop on St. Thomas led to the arrest of an Estate Bovoni man on Sunday, authorities said.
Nelson Sanderson, 21, was arrested about 3:16 a.m. Sunday and charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
While investigating the report, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle operated by Sanderson, according to the VIPD.
“The officers searched the vehicle and found ammunition,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.
Officers from the VIPD’s Special Operations Bureau responded to a report of shots fired in Paul M. Pearson Gardens housing project in the early morning hours on Sunday, according to Derima.
Bail for Sanderson was set at $10,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC) pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
Based on the charges against him, Sanderson is likely to face federal illegal ammunition charges as well.
