FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man said his car was damaged by gunfire as he was driving through Grove Place in the early morning hours on Sunday.
The 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched police officers to Grove Place after a report of discharging of shots came in at 2:10 a.m. Sunday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“The complainant stated that as he drove through the area, he heard what he believed to be the discharge of a firearm,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “Once out of the area, he inspected his vehicle, and found some damage.”
The man driving his car in Grove Place was not injured by the gunfire, according to Derima.
“Officers responded to the location and they continue to investigate this case,” he said.
Jonathan Fontenelle, 28, who was shot to death at Louis E. Brown Villas on Thursday morning, lived in Estate Grove Place.
Meanwhile, some people on social media said that increased police patrols of high-crime areas was the solution to the U.S. Virgin Islands’ drug-crime problem.
“What is it going to take for the police to realize that the same thing’s happening over and over for them to start either patrol more often or stake out in the troubling areas,” Nini Nini said on Facebook. “An innocent girl was already murdered driving around and you still have the same news repeating and repeating.”
If anyone has information about this shooting, you are urged to contact police by calling 911, the Crime Tip Line at (340) 778-4950, or Crime Stoppers USVI at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
